For Halloween, I’m analyzing the sound design in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s game, which demonstrates the unique roles audio can play in a horror game! Sound isn’t just a scare tactic; it can support or diminish the amount of control a player feels over a nightmarish scenario.
Thanks to my friend Wolfgang for help editing the script!

21.03.2022The number one skill that this video creator has is not his description of horror games, but rather his conveniently remarkable English skills.

19.03.2022Idk if its just me but the sped up doorway sound reminds me of the FNAF 1 trailer

19.03.20227:35 it should be noted that this sound isn’t totally a red herring, because it actually plays when an animatronic is getting closer to your office.

19.03.20227:20 I always thought that sound was the light bulb slightly combined with the fan spinning. But more predominant the light bulb

18.03.2022The "vaguely vocal" sounds Bonnie and Chica make are actually advantageous, as you can hear them in the office without looking at the monitor.

Freddy Fazbear
18.03.2022Was I the only one who thought he was going to say "Hello? Hello, hello? Uhh, I wanted to record a message for you… to help you get settled in on your first night. Um, I actually worked in that office before you. I’m… finishing up my last week now, as a matter of fact, so… I know it can be a bit overwhelming, but I’m here to tell you: there’s nothing to worry about. Uh, you’ll do fine! So… let’s just focus on getting you through your first week. Okay? Uh, let’s see. First, there’s an introductory greeting from the company that I’m supposed to read. Eh, it’s kind of a legal thing, you know. Um, 'Welcome to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza: a magical place for kids and grown-ups alike, where fantasy and fun come to life. Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for damage to property or person. Upon discovery of damage or if death has occurred, a missing person’s report will be filed within ninety days or as soon as property and premises have been thoroughly cleaned and bleached and the carpets have been replaced.' Blah, blah, blah… Now that might sound bad, I know. But there’s really nothing to worry about. Uh, the animatronic characters here do get a bit quirky at night, but do I blame them? No! If I were forced to sing… those same stupid songs for twenty years, and I never got a bath? I’d probably be a bit irritable at night too. So remember: these characters hold a special place in the hearts of children, and you need to show them a little respect. Right? Okay. So just be aware: the characters do tend to wander a bit. Uhh, they’re left in some kind of "free-roaming mode" at night. Uhh… something about their servos locking up if they get turned off for too long. Uhh… they used to be allowed to walk around during the day, too, but then there was the Bite of '87. Yeah… I-It’s amazing that the human body can live without the frontal lobe, you know? Now concerning your safety: the only real risk to you as a night watchman here, if any, is the fact that these characters, uhh, if they happen to see you after hours, probably won’t recognize you as a person. Th-They’ll most likely see you as a metal endoskeleton without its costume on. Now, since that’s against the rules here at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, they’ll probably try to… forcefully stuff you inside a Freddy Fazbear suit. Um, now that wouldn’t be so bad if the suits themselves weren’t filled with crossbeams, wires, and animatronic devices, especially around the facial area. So you can imagine how having your head forcefully pressed inside one of those could cause a bit of discomfort… and death. Uh, the only parts of you that would likely see the light of day again would be your eyeballs and teeth when they pop out the front of the mask, heh. …Y-Yeah, they don’t tell you these things when you sign up… But hey! First day should be a breeze; I’ll chat with you tomorrow. Uhh, check those cameras, and remember to close the doors only if absolutely necessary. Gotta conserve power. Alright. Goodnight." in the beginning, or was it just me?

15.03.2022Ngl after all these years fnaf 1 is still pretty creepy to me, and it seems the audio is a big part of that. Yeah the robots are spooky looking but hearing Freddy’s deep garbled laugh or hearing the cameras glitch out did give me some chills lol

14.03.2022In 6:33 I don't think the fan can make that sound, I think the light in the office is the one that made the sound, trust me I heard this sound from the light and not a fan cuz the fan cannot make that sound

14.03.2022The swirly one means The animatronics are getting very close

14.03.2022Technically, phone guy's advice to sit still when Freddy is at the door isn't entirely wrong…
If the power goes out, and Freddy starts his song, you can take your hands off your mouse and keyboard. In doing so, he will stall for longer before attacking, which I wish I had known on my first playthrough.

13.03.2022I think the strange swirling noise is helpful in some way, it only starts playing when someone enters a hallway

13.03.2022This video's gotten a bit of information wrong. For instance, the animatronic scream in FNAF 1 is not a recording of a child screaming, it's a sound clip of a woman's scream from an 80's sci-fi horror film called Inseminoid (1981). Apologies for that!
